If Jimmy Smith was "the Charlie Parker of the reed organ," Larry Young was its John Coltrane. One of the shattering innovators of the mid to recent '60s, Young fashioned a classifiable average approach to the Hammond B-3 at a time when Smith's earthy, blues-drenched soul-jazz stylus was the instrument's prevalent voice. Initially, Young was very much a Smith champion himself. After playing with various R&B bands in the fifties and organism featured as a sideman with tenor saxman Jimmy Forrest in 1960, Young debuted as a leader that class with Testifying, which, like his subsequent soul-jazz efforts for Prestige, Danton True Young Blues (1960), and Groove Street, (1962), left no doubt that Smith was his primary inspiration. But when Young went to Blue Note in 1964, he was well on his room to comely a major groundbreaker. Coltrane's post-bop influence asserted itself more than and more in Young's playing and composing, and his forge grew practically more than cerebral and explorative. I, recorded in 1965, remains his best-known album. Quick to embrace fusion, Young played with Miles Davis in 1969, John McLaughlin in 1970, and Tony Williams' groundbreaking Lifetime in the early '70s. Unfortunately, his ferment off uneven and temperamental as the '70s progressed. Young was only 38 when, in 1978, he checked into the hospital hurt from stomach pains, and died from untreated pneumonia. The Hammond hero's ferment for Blue Note (as both a draft card and a sideman) was united for Mosaic's limited edition six-CD box determine The Complete Blue Note Recordings.

Veterans Groups Lobby Congress To Approve VA Budget One Year In Advance To Improve Veterans' Health Care

A alinement of veterans' groups called Stand Up For Veterans is lobbying for Congress to fix the Department of Veterans Affairs budget one yr in get along to yield the agency a "more predictable support stream" and improve wellness care for veterans, the Christian Science Monitor reports. According to the Monitor, the coalition believes preparing its budget in advance would shield VA from "political wrangling" that canful result in funding delays that oblige the delegacy to freeze hiring, reduce some services and lengthen waiting-room delays "to the point that some veterans simply go home."

Although VA funding has increased over the past several years, approval of the appropriations has ofttimes been delayed for months into the fiscal year for which it was designated. According to the Monitor, VA funding was approved 142 days into FY 2003, 114 years into FY 2004 and 137 years into FY 2007.

The Monitor reports that veterans groups have for age worked to make VA funding mandatory spending, rather than discretionary spending, devising it "essentially automatic." However, because past tense efforts have failed, this year the groups ar pushing for VA financial backing to become an "gain ground appropriation," under which Congress approves the budget one year in advance of time. According to the Monitor, such a procedure would minimize funding delays' effect on health care services and "lock in financial backing" each year.

Although "it may seem like particular treatment, veterans say they deserve that," according to the Monitor. Peter Dickinson, a coordinator for Stand Up for Veterans, aforementioned, "We believe unapologetically that veterans do deserve to be taken care of first." However, advocates for taxpayers "crawl at the idea" because they believe it would limit Congress' ability to monitor federal spending.

On Saturday, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) will speak to a group of veterans in Las Vegas, where organizers hope McCain will pledge his livelihood for the plan. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) volition appear at the case by telecasting teleconference.

Comments
Joseph Violante, national legislative director for Disabled American Veterans, said, "All we're asking them to do is fund VA at the level that is needed, non at the level the government wants to drop." Steve Ellis, vice president at Taxpayers for Common Sense, said, "I don't think anyone is suggesting that we stiff our veterans, simply there is a story of flexibility that you need to have in the discretionary budget" to maintain supervision. Ellis added, "You end up spending more through advance appropriations" (Lubold, Christian Science Monitor, 8/8).

Known for its obsession with Satanism and the occult, Satanic Slaughter was a transient Swedish end metal/black alloy band that evolved into the better-known Witchery. The blistery, ferocious Satanic Slaughter was formed in Sweden in the mid-'90s, when founder/bassist Stephan Dark united forces with isaac Merrit Singer Toxine, drummer Mique, and 2 guitarists: Patrik Jensen (erst of Seance) and Richard Corpse. Unlike some of the Scandinavian end alloy, dark metal, and grindcore bands that emerged in the 1990s, Satanic Slaughter did non favor an ultra-fast tempo every minute of the day; its tempos varied, although the headbangers provided enough riotous moments to encourage the formation of mosh pits at its live shows. After transcription deuce as brutal albums with the band -- Satanic Slaughter and Land of the Unholy Souls, both on Necropolis -- Stephan Dark parted company with the quatern other Swedes in 1997. That was when Satanic Slaughter became Witchery and a new lineup was formed, ane that included Toxine on lead vocals, Jensen and Corpse on guitar, Mique on drums, and Sharlee D'Angelo (of Mercyful Fate fame) on sea bass instead of Dark. When Mique left wing the band, he was replaced by Martin Axe (wHO had been with a Scandinavian banding called Nifelheim). For Jensen, Witchery has non been a full-time gig; he is best known for playing with the Haunted, some other Swedish end metal/black alloy outfit. As Witchery, the new lineup made its recording debut for Necropolis with 1998's Restless and Dead and went on to provide various more albums for that label in the belated '90s and early 2000s. In 2001, Necropolis reissued Satanic Slaughter and Land of the Unholy Souls back-to-back on a 25-track CD highborn The Early Years: Dawn of Darkness.

TV series to search for top disabled model

The BBC is to launch a TV talent search for disabled models.
'Britain's Missing Top Model' will see eight women compete before a panel of industry experts.

BBC3 controller Danny Cohen said: "This series aims to challenge the artificial boundaries that seem to exist in the beauty and fashion industries.
"It would be great if in the future we began to see more disabled models gracing the covers of the world's magazines."
The competition is open to disabled women aged between 18 and 30.
It has a similar format to 'America's Next Top Model', which was hosted by Tyra Banks. The eight finalists will live together in an apartment and complete a different challenge each week.
Industry experts will train them for photoshoots, location work and the catwalk.
The series will be supported by Ouch, the BBC's disability website, and is being made in consultation with Disability Action in Islington, North London.
